In April 2023, the UW College of Agricultural and Life Sciences celebrated the completion of construction to modernize Babcock Hall — the core of the UW’s dairy-product research and training. This is the first major renovation to the dairy plant since it was built in 1951. The essential updates transform Babcock Hall Dairy Plant with the most up-to-date equipment, increased freezer space, a new laboratory for students and researchers, and more. All told, this project improves production of the ice cream and cheese we all know and love and has created an addition for the Center for Dairy Research (CDR).
“Having a world-class facility like this enables us to attract the best people in dairy research,” says John Lucey, CDR director and professor of food science. “But we don’t do it alone. Huge credit goes to the donors, who helped fund the project and encouraged state officials to support it.”
